Consists of a typescript of a speech Steagall gave at the dedication of the Carillion Bell Tower in Ozark, Ala.; and a 90-minute audiotaped interview, with transcript, conducted by Dr. Dwayne Cox, archivist of Auburn University. The interview concerns the controversial administration of Hanley Funderburk as AU President, 1982-84.

East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
